Head Fly Operator and Carpenter, Hylton Performing Arts Center

About the Position:
The Head Fly Operator and Carpenter will provide comprehensive execution and supervision of carpentry and rigging elements for all activities of the Hylton Performing Arts Center comprising the HPAC Subscription series, academic departments, divisions, and programs, GMU events and rentals as scheduled in the HPAC performance facilities. They will also supervise and perform the operation and setup of all staging and rigging equipment for Merchant Hall events.
Serve as on-site rigging and fly system supervisor for all Merchant Hall events and adjunct activities;
Supervise all stage preparations to include the setup and construction of staging and rigging equipment to meet artist and company technical requirements;
Coordinate personnel and equipment to fulfill event parameters;
Execute events within established budgets;
Develop and implement the annual maintenance and inventory program for staging and rigging equipment for HPAC;
Assist the Production Manager with the preparation and monitoring of the annual budget for equipment maintenance, service and repair;
Plan for special initiatives and projects, and perform the work as required for the replacement, repair, rehabilitation and installation of stage equipment and systems;
Create and maintain line schedules for recurring events;
Perform occasional operation of stage equipment such as lighting and sound equipment needed to facilitate rehearsals and performances;
Demonstrate knowledge and competence to operate stage lighting and sound equipment on par with journeyman level of engagement;
Demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills to adequately direct others to perform and complete required stage work;
Participate in regular staff, event and production meetings;
Coordinate carpentry department needs with other production personnel and related departments for effective overall management;
Provide instruction and/or mentoring for students with interest in carpentry, staging and rigging.
Knowledge of single purchase counterweight fly system, shop and stage carpentry, rigging, technical theatre, music, drama, and dance idioms;
Proficiency in carpentry and rigging to meet requirements of varied performance artists, musicians, dancers, etc.;
Ability to setup, operate, and maintain scenery and props, and staging and rigging systems and equipment;
Ability to identify proper rigging standards for flying scenery;
Training in counterweight fly systems, shop carpentry, stage carpentry, rigging, and theatre technology;
Intermediate shop and stage carpentry; intermediate fly system and rigging; advanced generalist in theatre technology.
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
