Position Summary: To assist the District Office in its day-to-day operations by performing a variety of tasks, involved in the distribution of electricity, to provide the most economical and reliable service to member/owners while complying with SVEC safety policies and procedures.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to – Line Superintendent Directs – None
Responsibilities and Authorities:
Essential Functions of the Job - Gather field information as needed for day-to-day operations of the District Office, including, but not limited to, reading meters, monthly meter exchanges and connecting and disconnecting meters; including accurate documentation. Schedule and perform overhead and underground inspections and tests. Locate SVEC underground lines as needed and assist as assigned with Miss Utility program. Keep current SVEC general records and District map books by adding or deleting facilities as shown on completed work orders. Assist, as needed and under strict supervision, crews in the construction, installation, maintenance, and removal of electric distribution lines, on both energized and de-energized lines where climbing is not required. May be asked to make initial SVEC response and assess situation and/or replace fuses etc., which assists with reducing outage times. Responsible for vehicle, tools, and other SVEC equipment assigned for his/her use and must be proficient in the use of the equipment used in daily job functions. Assist in special projects, as necessary.

Training and Experience – One year experience preferred in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of electric systems or equivalent work experience. Participation in employment development and powerline training programs. Participation in SVEC job safety and training programs and other SVEC sponsored technical workshops and seminars. Attendance at other job-related technical courses and seminars is required. Successfully complete certification as a flagman under the certified program for the state of Virginia.
Knowledge - A thorough knowledge of rural electrification and Cooperative principles. Knowledge of basic electricity and experience with working in a cooperative environment are preferred.
Abilities and Skills - Must be able to maintain professionalism and control under all circumstances. Has and maintains valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record and be able to operate SVEC vehicles. Must become and remain certified in CPR and first aid. Must also be skilled in the use of all safety equipment. Must pass physical exam, drug & alcohol testing initially; drug/alcohol test randomly. Ability to handle the challenge of operating efficiently under a very flexible schedule due to the number of unanticipated and unplanned requests for services from the various individuals, departments and outside contacts with whom this position is involved. Leadership ability and the ability to motivate peers toward goal achievement. Strong verbal, written, analytical and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Ability to perform job responsibilities in a timely manner within established guidelines under minimal supervision. Ability to stay current on changes to all areas for which this position has responsibility. Must be of high integrity and possess good working habits. Ability to communicate effectively with fellow associates, general public, and especially member-owners, during and after hours as first responder. Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s license, Class A. Must obtain and hold forklift and flagman certification in the state of Virginia. Must participate in SVEC’s scheduled On-Call program. Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work.
Educational Requirements – High School Diploma or GED
