Southside Electric Cooperative is looking for an experienced Apparatus Technician to join our team.

What will you do if hired?
Our Apparatus Technicians install, operate, maintain, and repair Cooperative line and substation apparatus, SCADA, and load management equipment effectively, efficiently, and safely. You are adept at working with equipment including: regulators, reclosers, transformers, sectionalizers, circuit breakers, and switches. You fully understand system maps, staking sheets, and other work order procedures. When necessary, you are ready to provide supervision that encourages those assigned to you to work effectively, efficiently, and safely in accomplishing the installation, testing, and maintenance of all types of apparatus and substation related equipment. You take pride in providing prompt, efficient, and reliable technical service throughout the Cooperative’s electrical system and will always look for new methods to refine existing work procedures and develop new techniques, concepts, or programs within established policies.
Apparatus Technicians conduct maintenance in the following areas that include, but are not limited to: Transformers (including special banks); breakers and reclosers; regulators and recloser control panels; direct current systems for substation equipment; primary and secondary metering; switches and structure; power transformers; R-vac; VFI; reclosers; automatic transfer switches; underground fault indicators; substation readings and inspections; substation high side fuse holders and air break switches; regulators and OCR bypass switches; mobile generator; mobile substation; circuit switcher; circuit breaker; capacitor banks and controls.
Knowledge and Ability
Sound knowledge in operations of all overhead and underground distribution line equipment and substations.
Knowledge of operation of line and bucket trucks and RUS construction specifications preferred.
Knowledge of operation of all electronic line equipment and the ability to interpret and comprehend schematics.
Must have an effective knowledge of construction specifications and National Electric Safety Code requirements pertaining to line construction.
Strong mathematics and mechanical aptitude, as well as strong computer skills.
Valid Class A Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to acquire one within three months from date of hire.
Ability to perform hard physical labor whenever it is necessary.
Ability to travel to various locations throughout the Cooperative’s service area to complete work assignments.
Your residency must be within 60 minutes legal driving time to the Western District Office in Altavista, VA, or you must be willing to relocate to that area.
Three years’ experience with electrical troubleshooting and a bachelor’s degree. OR five years’ experience with electrical troubleshooting and an associate degree.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Project Management experience preferred.
An associate degree in electronics engineering, electrical engineering, or related field is required.
Bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering or electrical engineering desirable.
If not already completed, selected technician will be required to complete the four (4) year Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives Substation Technician Apprentice program. This is an eight (8) step development program, with each step utilizing a 32-hour workshop, coupled with on-the-job training.
